Hon. Secretary for thinong Affairs,

2

On Sunday, July 2nd., at Kr. Jamieson's desire, I

socompanied 1. Bennett, Assistant Consul, up the Yush Ham

railway so far as Tüm Tam, to get what information we could

about the military situstion there.

The train journey from Wong Sha took about 5 hours

for a distance of 45 miles. The morning train was well filled

with ordinary passengers and also carried some troops. Tüm Tam

is now the terminus of what may be called Lung's section of the

limp. The next station, € miles further on, is Pa Kong-Hau,

which is held by Li, and thence to Shiu Kwan is his section.

Passengers can get out at Yün Tâm and walk for 2 hours by road

to Pa Long Kau. A letter carrier from Canton was going to do

this walk and we could have accompanied him if we had had the

time. There is evidence that railway passenger traffic from

Pa Kong Hau northwards has been stopped, but that military

trains are ruming.

Disposition of the armigs: Lung's troops ars encamped at Yün

Tan on the south bank of a tributary of the Horth River. The

railway bridge crosses the stream, which is about 50 yards wide,

3/4 milạ bəyond Yün Tam, and is held by Lung. The two armies

ers entranced opposits to one another at a distamos of là or

2 miles, but we could ses nothing of Li'■ army, which was said

to be under cover of hilly ground. Lung has no positions on the

north bank, but Li has one advanosd post on the south bank.

Any

operations would probably be confined to a two or three mile

front at most, since there are chains of high hills on sither

flank. We had no difficulty in entering part of Lung's trenches, which, warp about 5 feet deep, but scrappy and not continuous

Humbar, quality and equipment: Lung is said to have over 10,000

men at the front. They are mostly from Yunnan and Kwong 5ɛi, but with an admixture of new Gantonese levias, which are said

#

to be of poor quality. The other: seemed pretty useful, and we
